How to Clean a Fill Valve in a Whirlpool Dishwasher

The Whirlpool Corporation is a well-known manufacturer of home appliances that traces its origin to the early 1900s and the leadership of the Upton family of St. Joseph, Michigan. One popular Whirlpool product is the dishwasher, which is available in multiple styles. The fill valve in a dishwasher is the valve through which water passes from the home water line to the appliance. If this valve becomes dirty or clogged, your dishwasher may not get your dishes completely clean. Clean this valve if necessary using mild soap and water.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the electrical power going to your dishwasher by turning off the switch in your breaker box that coincides with your dishwasher.

    • 2

Tighten the handle on the valves that control the water flowing from the pipes in your wall to your dishwasher. This will shut off the water.

    • 3

Unscrew the screws holding the bottom panel of the dishwasher in place and remove the bottom panel. Set this panel aside.

    • 4

Place a towel under the fill valve. You will see a brass piece extending down on the left side of the dishwasher. This extension is part of the fill valve. Place a towel under this area to catch any remaining water that may escape the pipes during this process.

    • 5

Use an adjustable wrench to disconnect the small water supply line that is connected to the fill valve.

    • 6

Grip the brass elbow with the wrench and loosen it. Finish unscrewing this elbow with your fingers and set it aside.

    • 7

Unscrew the mounting screw toward the rear left side of the fill valve.

    • 8

Slide the fill valve to the right and downward to remove it from the frame of the dishwasher.

    • 9

Disconnect the two wires running to the fill valve.

    • 10

Use a pair of pliers to release the clamp that is holding the rear water hose and detach the fill valve from the hose.

    • 11

Place the fill valve into a sink of hot, soapy water. Wet a toothbrush with this hot, soapy water and use it to scrub all of the surfaces of the fill valve.

    • 12

Reattach the fill valve to the water hose and tighten the clamp with your pliers.

    • 13

Reconnect the two electrical wires running to the fill valve.

    • 14

Slide the valve back into the dishwasher's frame and reattach the mounting screw to hold it in place.

    • 15

Screw the brass elbow back onto the valve. Tighten the elbow with your wrench.

    • 16

Connect the water supply line back to the brass elbow and tighten it with your wrench.

    • 17

Turn the water supply back on. Look for leaks. If you see any, tighten the supply line, water hose and brass elbow.

    • 18

Reattach the bottom panel and screw it into place.

    • 19

Turn the power back on at the breaker box.
