Tips on Installing Kitchenaid Deep Dishwashers

Built-in dishwashers came a long way in the past few years. KitchenAid dishwashers now offer deep-set, 28-inch depth dishwashers with more cleaning capacity than the standard 24-inch depth dishwasher. Although installation relating to water pipes and electrical systems is the same, those extra 4 inches in depth variation must be considered.
  1. Measure

    • Before buying a deep-set dishwasher, measure the space your current dishwasher occupies. If it is 24 inches and barely fits, you won’t have the space accommodating a larger model. Check the current space’s width and height as well, since some deep-set KitchenAid dishwashers are also slightly taller. According to KitchenAid, dishwasher width and height can be reduced to accommodate tighter spaces by removing the padded insulation and underside wheels.

    Handle and Door Considerations

    • Although you may have the space to accommodate the deep dishwasher, the 28-inch measurement does not account for the dishwasher door. Most deep-set dishwashers from the KitchenAid line have door depths that range from three-quarters inch to more than 1 inch in size. Check the dishwasher model you are going to install and include the door measurement in the unit’s depth.

    Water Pressure and Supply

    • A deep-set washer has more cleaning capacity. In order to clean, it needs higher water pressure. KitchenAid recommends a minimum of 120 psi coming from the hot water line for all of its models. Test the water temperature making sure it registers at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit from the hot water supply. If using elbows or connective lines hooking up the water supply to the dishwashing unit, test the psi after the elbows and additional tubing are in place. You can check psi with a pressure checker purchased from a hardware supply store.

    Connection Lines

    • If you are replacing a dishwasher, there are already holes in place between the cabinet frame around the dishwasher and to the pipes under the sink for the dishwasher’s water and drain lines. However, when installing a deep-set dishwasher, the holes might no longer align. Check the holes for running the lines between the sink and dishwasher and consider drilling new holes if needed preventing the lines from having to stretch or bend inside the cabinet.
