How to Replace the Turbidity Sensor in a GE Dishwasher

The turbidity sensor in the sump pump assembly of a General Electric dishwasher measures the amount of suspended particles in the wash water and helps ensure the debris doesn't cause your dishwasher to clog or not clean properly. If washed dishes continue to have food on them or if food particles remain in the dishwasher, you may need to replace the turbidity sensor by removing it from the sump pump assembly.

    • 1

Turn off the electrical power to the GE dishwasher from your kitchen circuit breaker.

    • 2

Open the dishwasher door and pull out and remove the top and bottom racks from the unit.

    • 3

Turn the bottom spray arm counterclockwise and lift it to remove it from the dishwasher.

    • 4

Remove the screws from the sump cover using a screwdriver and lift the sump cover to remove it.

    • 5

Find the sump pump assembly, which includes a small motor unit attached to a drain hose, in the bottom center of the dishwasher and find the turbidity sensor, a small silver cylinder piece, on the side of the pump.

    • 6

Loosen the retaining screw next to the sensor and slide the retaining clamp back.

    • 7

Lift and remove the turbidity sensor from the sump. Insert the new turbidity sensor into the sump.

Place the sump cover back over the sump pump assembly and reinsert the screws into the cover.

Reinsert the spray arm and turn it clockwise to lock it into place. Place the top and bottom racks back into the dishwasher.

Close the dishwasher door and turn the electrical power back on at the circuit breaker.
