Installation for a Dishwasher Hot Water Supply Line

Dishwashers, when installed properly, can use less water than hand washing. The new Energy Star approved models are rated and tested to use less water than the dishwashers of yesteryear. Installing your own dishwasher does not need to be a huge headache, but there are some difficult plumbing challenges including the installation of the hot water line. Proper set up and installation requires good measuring and possibly some soldering, a technique where heat and filler metal is used to join plumbing connections.
  1. Preparing the Cabinet

    • The hot water line for your dishwasher runs through the side of the cabinet over to the dishwasher location. You need to prepare a hole in the cabinet. Fit a drill with a 2-inch drill bit and make a hole 3 inches up from the floor and 2 inches back from the wall. Uncoil your copper tubing and feed it through the hole in the cabinet and make sure it reaches from the water supply to the dishwasher location.

    Water Supply Line

    • The hot water supply line needs to be modified to fit the water supply line for the dishwasher. A t-fitting should be placed over the end of your water supply. A shutoff valve for the sink above the water supply is soldered into the top of the t-fitting. Fit a shut off valve for the dishwasher on the bottom and solder it in.

    Fitting the Copper Supply Line

    • The copper hot water supply line needs to be bent to fit over the end of the dishwasher shutoff valve. Insert a tub bending spring into the end of the line to make it big enough to fit over the shutoff valve. Slide a compression nut and a ferrule into the end of the copper pipe and attach it to the shutoff valve.

    Attaching Supply to the Dishwasher

    • Align the copper hot water supply line on the floor so that it fits underneath the dishwasher. Again, the end of the copper piping needs to be bent with a spring to fit a compression nut and ferrule. The water inlet valve for the dishwasher sits on the back of the unit. The compression nut will fit over the inlet. Tighten the compression nut using a wrench to finish the hot water connection to your dishwasher.
