How to Remove Upper Rack Pins From a Dishwasher

The upper rack pins on a dishwasher stop the rack when it is fully extended on the slides for loading or unloading dishes. This prevents the rack from crashing to the floor or on top of the bottom dish rack. To take out the upper rack for cleaning or replacement, you must remove the rack pins. The parts typically snap out of the left and right slides, although you may need hand tools if the pins are stuck.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the dishwasher door to pull out the upper rack after the cycle is finished. Remove all items from the upper rack.

    • 2

Pull the side pins outward on the left and right rack edges near the front to pop them loose from the rack.

    • 3

Pull the pins outward using pliers, if necessary, to disengage the parts from the rack sides if the pins are difficult to remove. Months or years of running hot water in the appliance may cause the pins to become stuck, as the plastic parts repeatedly soften slightly and harden after cooling.

    • 4

Rotate the pins downward to unlock the end caps, which now snap open.

    • 5

Pull the rack-pin and end-cap assemblies on the left and the right off the rack from the front.
