How to Clean the Filter on a Maytag MDB5601AWB Dishwasher

The product description for the Maytag MDB5601AWB dishwasher model is "Built-In Oversize Capacity Plus Tall Tub." This means your appliance can handle a large load of dishes at once, which you might expect to create an excess of food and debris that can clog the filters. However, Maytag states in the owner's manual that this model dishwasher is "self-cleaning." There isn't a removable filter, per say, which is an available feature option in other dishwashers. Nonetheless, there are six other aspects of your Maytag dishwasher that you can clean and troubleshoot to help you get the cleanest dishes possible.

Instructions

Use a toothpick to unclog any debris in the lower spraying arm at the bottom of the dishwasher. A blocked nozzle or outlet cannot properly spray the dishes with water in order to clean them.

    • 2

Choose the "Rinse Only" cycle if the dishes have a mild odor after completing a cycle. For more pungent odors, add baking soda to both sides of the detergent cup. Choose "Light Wash." Open the door to interrupt the cycle after 10 minutes. Let the machine rest with the odor-absorbing baking soda solution overnight. Close the door completely the next day and allow the dishwasher to finish the cycle.

Select the "Hi Temp Wash" option to prevent spotted and cloudy glasses. Also, use a rinse aid.

    • 4

Open the door after you hear that the dishwasher has finished filling with water. Use a thermometer to carefully measure the temperature of the water resting at the bottom of the dishwasher. Avoid touching the scalding hot water, racks and tub in the dishwasher. The temperature should be at least 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Adjust your water heater if the water is not hot enough.

    • 5

Choose a more powerful cycle if food remains on the dishes. Some models have the "Tough Scrub" and "Hi Temp Wash" options, which help to better clean the dishes.

    • 6

Check the spray arms after you have loaded the dishes. Make sure the upper arms are not blocked by cups and lower arms blocked by fallen dishes and utensils. The arms must have free movement to properly clean the dishes.
