How to Tighten the Latch on a Kenmore Dishwasher

The door latch handle on your Kenmore dishwasher ensures that the dishwasher door is securely tightened at all times. When the door is open, the door latch handle has some play to it, although the latch handle should be tight when the door is in the locked position. If the door latch handle is loose, you must either replace the latch itself or replace the door latch link and spring. To gain access to the door latch, you must first disassemble the dishwasher's control panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the dishwasher's power supply in your home's service panel.

    • 2

Open the dishwasher door, then remove the screws found at the top of the inner door panel, which secure the control panel to the front of the dishwasher door.

    • 3

Close the dishwasher door, but do not lock.

    • 4

Rotate the control panel down so the rear components are accessible.

    • 5

Lift the moisture shield, located on the dishwasher control board, then disconnect the control panel ribbon connector. The ribbon connector has a tab that must be depressed before removing it from the board.

    • 6

Pull the rinse aid sensor wire off the interface board on the inside of the control panel.

    • 7

Remove the mounting screws securing the interface board to the control panel, then remove the interface board.

    • 8

Pull the door latch handle out of the control board for repair.

    • 9

Inspect the spring to ensure it is securely connected to the door latch handle as well as to the door latch link. If the spring has come disconnected, reconnect it and reassemble the dishwasher.

    • 10

Examine the door latch handle for cracks or breaks, indicating that you must replace the handle.

    • 11

Disconnect the door latch handle spring, then remove the door latch link by sliding it to the side and removing.

    • 12

Install the new door latch link and spring into the door handle, if you are replacing the link and spring. Insert the old door latch link and spring into the new door handle, if you are replacing the handle.

    • 13

Insert the door handle back into the dishwasher's control panel, ensuring that the tabs on the handle fit into the notches on the control panel.

    • 14

Reassemble the dishwasher, reversing the steps you took to disassemble.

    • 15

Close the dishwasher door, then restore power to the dishwasher.
