Do I Need to Change Anything in My Kitchen Plumbing if I Get a Portable Dishwasher?

Portable dishwashers are a convenient alternative to built-in dishwashers if you do not have the counter space to have a permanent one installed. The top of the portable dishwasher is actually a countertop, giving you added space for food preparation. You can easily roll the wheeled dishwasher to your sink and connect it to your faucet. The only thing you need for the connection is a special faucet adapter kit for your existing faucet.
  1. Setup

    • The portable dishwasher adapter kit comes with instructions but most adapters connect in the same way. You need to remove the original aerator and washer. Your faucet will either have outside or inside threads. The dishwasher adapter kit comes with adapters for both types of faucets. All you have to do is screw on the new aerator and snap the dishwasher hose onto it. You do not have to alter your kitchen faucet plumbing in any way.

    Disconnecting

    • Before you disconnect the portable dishwasher from the faucet, turn off the hot water, unplug it, and press the red button on the side of the hose to release excess water into the sink. Push up on the hose connector to unsnap it from the faucet aerator. Most portable dishwashers have an opening on the back where you push in the hose for storage.

    Tips

    • Run the hot water for a few minutes before connecting the dishwasher, so the first wash is hot enough to remove dried on food and grease more efficiently. If you want to conserve electricity, you can turn off the dishwasher, unplug it before the dry cycle, and let the dishes air dry.

Most portable dishwashers feature washing cycles, such as light wash, normal wash, and pots and pans. If you only have a few dishes to wash or the dishes are only lightly soiled, select the feature with the shortest wash cycle to conserve water consumption.

    Warnings

    • Use an available grounded, three-prong outlet near the sink because portable dishwashers come equipped this type of plug. Since you are dealing with water, do not use a two-prong adapter or extension cord for plugging in the dishwasher to prevent an electric shock.

Disconnect the dishwasher when it has finished the wash-and-rinse cycle because extended water pressure on the rubber hose could make it burst.
