How to Fix a Magic Chef Dishwasher Door

The most important part of your Magic Chef dishwasher's door is its door latch mechanism. If this is damaged or not working properly, it can make your machine stop working completely. Fortunately, the process for replacing your unit's latch is quick and straightforward. Maytag acquired Magic Chef in 1986.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the power supply to your dishwasher. If it's hardwired, switch off its circuit. If it has a plug, unplug it from its wall socket.

    • 2

Open your machine and remove the screws around the perimeter of the inside of the door. You can then release and remove the inner door panel.

    • 3

Squeeze the tabs at the top of the inside of the door to release the control shield. Put the upper brace to one side.

    • 4

Remove the wires from the door latch switches with a pair of pliers. Take note of each wire's position as you do so.

    • 5

Remove the mounting screw and lift out the door latch housing.

    • 6

Separate the door handle from the faulty latch with a screwdriver.

    • 7

Connect the switches to your new door latch housing and slot in the door handle.

    • 8

Slide the door latch housing back into place and secure with the mounting screw.

    • 9

Reconnect the switch wires, replace the upper brace, snap in the control shield, and refit the inner door panel.

    • 10

Restore power to your machine and run a test cycle.
