How to Troubleshoot a GE Dishwasher That Is Not Pumping Water

If your GE dishwasher was already installed when you moved into your home, then you might not be familiar with the hidden components that facilitate its operation. However, an essential plumbing system brings in clean water and drains used water from the dishwasher. Many of the system's components are under the kitchen sink, but a few also exist in parts of the dishwasher that you might not think too much about, such as the drain at the bottom. Perform some basic troubleshooting if your dishwasher isn't pumping water into or out of the appliance properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the cabinet door beneath the kitchen sink. Find the water supply valve that leads to the dishwasher. Slowly turn the valve counterclockwise to make sure it is on and allowing water to pump through to the dishwasher.

    • 2

Time the dishwasher's start-up process to determine if the lack of water pumping is caused by a delay. This is indicative of models that use a knob or "turn-to-start" action. After starting the cycle, wait about three minutes for the dishwasher to start. This is a normal delay in some dishwasher models before the water valve turns on to pump in water.

After five minutes, if water is not pumping into the appliance, cancel the cycle. Slowly turn the knob to select the cycle again, but this time stop turning after you hear that the motor has started. It's possible you may have bypassed the cycle when you initially turned the knob.

    • 3

Examine the remaining water in the bottom of the tub. Up to 2 cups full of water is normal. If a "pool" of water is resting at the bottom, then you have a drainage problem.

    • 4

Check for paper and other non-biodegradable debris at the bottom of the dishwasher tub. Sometimes paper towels and plates mistakenly stick to another dish, and clog the drain during the wash and rinse cycles.

    • 5

Use a brand name detergent, as recommended by GE Appliances. Excess suds and clumpy, powdery soap in generic brands can clog the drain.

    • 6

Check the drain in the kitchen sink to make sure it is not clogged with food. Dishwasher draining is typically shared by the sink. If the sink drain includes a garbage disposal unit, then unplug the unit before inspecting the drain.

    • 7

Inspect the drain hose that leads from the dishwasher to the sink. Straighten out any kinks or bends.
