How Does a Frigidaire Dishwasher Work?

Founded in 1916, Frigidaire is one of the oldest continually operating home appliance manufacturers in the United States. Among Frigidaire's products is the dishwasher, an electric kitchen appliance for cleaning dishes. Many of Frigidaire's modern dishwashers are made from stainless steel and offer user-friendly button controls. Knowing the basics of how a Frigidaire works helps owners solve technical problems that may occur.
  1. Motor and Pump System

    • Frigidaire dishwashers have one electric motor and pump system. Once the dishwasher cycle begins, the electric motor operates the pump, which in turn sends water to the unit's sprays. The dishwasher contains three sprays: upper, middle and lower. The sprays are responsible for splashing water onto the dishes. Once the wash cycle finishes, the sprays stop releasing water and the pump forces water out of the dishwasher via a drain located at the base of the unit.

    Controls and Switches

    • The button controls and switches are located near the top of the Frigidaire dishwasher's exterior. These controls allow the user to determine the pressure and temperature of water released within the dishwasher. The Hi-Temp control cleanses the dishes with hot water with temperatures exceeding 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Water pressure options include high wash and low wash. Frigidaire dishwashers also have a China/Crystal cycle option for fragile dishes.

    Dish Racks

    • To load dishes, the Frigidaire dishwasher features two racks, upper and lower. The upper rack is primarily for cups and bowls since it doesn't have room for plates. Plates stand upright for cleaning and the top of the dishwasher is too close to the bottom of the upper rack. The lower rack is for plates. Plates fit into grooves known as tines, which prevent plates from falling. Tines on the upper rack support cups and bowls. On the lower rack, a silverware basket is available for forks, knives and spoons. Frigidaire dishwashers also have a removable high side shelf for additional dishware. Both racks have handles so the user can pull them out.

    Drying

    • After the wash cycle, Frigidaire dishwashers have a dryer for removing water from the dishes. The unit heats the air to cause a drying effect. All Frigidaire dishwashers have a vent at the bottom to release excess water vapors from the drying process. The vent remains closed during the washing cycle.

    Other Features

    • Modern Frigidaire dishwashers come equipped with smart soil sensors. These sensors detect how much food is on the dishes. After detection, the sensor determines the appropriate amount of water pressure and temperature needed for removing food stains. Users open the unit by pressing on the door latch. The latch locks the door once it's closed.
