How to Hook Up the Drain Valves on My Dishwasher

When installing your dishwasher, special attention must be paid to the placement and installation of the dishwasher drain hose. The drain hose, which connects to the inlet on the side of your garbage disposal, must be elevated above the disposal inlet to prevent dirty water from the sink from flowing into the dishwasher. The elevation of the hose also prevents the dishwasher from constantly draining, as gravity does not allow the water to flow through the hose when it is elevated.

Instructions

    • 1

Feed the dishwasher drain hose through the sidewall of the cabinet below the sink.

    • 2

Connect the drain hose by sliding it over the dishwasher inlet on the garbage disposal. If you do not have a garbage disposal, connect the dishwasher drain hose to the inlet on the P-trap on the underside of the sink.

    • 3

Tighten the screw on the clamp located at the end of the dishwasher hose to secure the hose to the inlet or P-trap.

    • 4

Use zip ties to secure the drain hose to the underside of the counter or sink, being sure that the hose is elevated above the inlet. This ensures that the dishwasher does not automatically drain and that dirty water from the sink cannot flow into the dishwasher, potentially contaminating your clean dishes.
