If you notice water leaking from the pump, it is very likely that the pump seal is the culprit. When the seal becomes damaged, it allows water to easily leak out during the wash or rinse cycle. The pump seal, also known as the main tub seal, is found beneath the drain impeller and needs replaced if you see any signs of visible damage. The seal can be replaced without having to replace the entire pump.
Every dishwasher comes with two impellers, the wash impeller and the drain impeller, to move the water to where it needs to go during different times of the wash cycle. Both impellers are made of a round, plastic material and resemble a blade-like fan. The drain impeller is directly beneath the wash impeller. If either of these impellers sustains any type of damage, they could cause a water leak and need to be replaced.
If the pump itself is damaged in any way, it can also cause the unit to leak water. Check the entire pump for any signs of leaks or broken parts. If anything is amiss, then the entire pump will need to be replaced. Also, check for any signs of corrosion around the base of the pump as this too can cause the pump to leak from the bottom. Replace the pump if you find any corrosion around the unit.
When removing the various parts to get at the pump or the pump seal, begin with removing the spray arm and then each of the impellers as you move down the line until you reach the pump and the pump seal, which is a small, rubber part that resembles a thimble in size and shape. Before removing the dishwasher door, make sure to unplug the machine from its energy source as a safety precaution. If you feel unsure of what you are doing, it is best to call in a professional to do the repair for you.
