What Does the Baffle in a Maytag Dishwasher Do?

Appliance manuals sometimes read like pamphlets written in the made-up languages found in “Harry Potter” or “Star Wars.” Dishwasher leaking? Check the baffle. Yeah, OK. What? To confuse matters further, the term baffle refers generically to a number of things that appear in a dishwasher. Understanding what the baffle in your Maytag does begins with understanding baffles in general and the specific role of a baffle in a dishwasher.
  1. Baffles

    • Baffle constitutes a generic term used to describe any device used to regulate, deflect or slow the flow of light, sound or fluids. Baffles come in myriad forms, including plates, walls and screens. For instance, the term baffle may refer to an acoustic panel installed in a ceiling to dampen noise, or it may denote a filter used to catch grease in professional kitchens as a means of preventing fires. Baffles appear as independent units and within larger units or systems.

    Dishwasher Door Baffle

    • Baffle in relation to your Maytag dishwasher most likely refers to a door baffle. A few types of door baffles exist, although they all serve the same basic purpose, that of preventing water from leaking out of a dishwasher during a wash cycle. Maytag dishwashers possess corner baffles that prevent leakage from the bottom corners of the unit. They may also possess central baffles, or devices that line the bottom of the dishwasher just under the door to prevent leakage from occurring in this area.

    Dishwasher Pipe Baffles

    • Dishwashers use the same drainage systems as the sink and any other appliance in the kitchen. Because of this, precautions exist to prevent these appliances from affecting one another. Outlet pipes on dishwashers often contain baffles to meter the flow of water so that huge quantities don’t come gushing from units after a wash cycle. A sudden, tremendous outflow of water can cause pipes to clog, which could send large amounts of water gushing from pipes into the sink, carrying with it detritus from the dishwasher.

    Additional Information

    • Technically speaking, the term “baffle” may refer to any number of devices found within a dishwasher. The gasket, for instance, checks the flow of water from within the dishwasher, preventing leakage. Although not termed a “baffle” by manufacturers, the gasket is actually a type of baffle. To determine where the baffle is on your Maytag dishwasher, check schematic designs available in your manual or online though the official Maytag website. Manufacturers generally use rubber or plastic in making all dishwasher door baffles.
