How to Replace a Kenmore Dishwasher Drain Pump

Kenmore dishwashers use an electric pump to empty water from the machine at the end of the washing cycle. The pump draws power from the wiring harness that delivers electricity to other components, including the motor, heating element and control panel. If the pump malfunctions--which can occur due to age--the Kenmore will not drain properly, if at all, until the unit is replaced. Changing the pump takes less than an hour. Replacement pumps are available through Sears, which sells the Kenmore line, or at appliance repair shops.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the circuit breaker for the circuit that provides power to the Kenmore dishwasher. Many homes typically have more than one breaker to handle electricity for the kitchen.

    • 2

Remove the screws on the left and right sides of the kickplate on the front of the machine. Pull the panel down and forward to take it off the cabinet. Look into the bottom of the dishwasher to find the pump bolted to the underside of the appliance near the center. A rubber drain hose extends from the pump toward the kitchen plumbing, where it attaches to the main sink drain.

    • 3

Place an old towel on the floor below the dishwasher.

    • 4

Pull the two wired connectors off the metal blades on the pump. These deliver power to operate the part. Note which wire connects to which blade so you can attach the wires correctly after installing the new part.

    • 5

Use pliers to squeeze and release the clamp holding the drain hose to the pump. Pull off the hose. The towel will absorb the small amount of water that may spill from the open end of the drain hose.

    • 6

Take out the screws in the sides of the pump where the part attaches to the metal frame beneath the Kenmore appliance. Remove the old pump.

    • 7

Place the new pump against the frame in the same orientation as the old pump, and then secure the pump to the frame with the screws.

    • 8

Push the drain hose onto the pump outlet, squeeze the clamp with pliers and slide the clamp so it is flush against the side of the new pump. This holds the drain hose securely.

    • 9

Attach the slide-on clip on the end of the two wires to the electrical terminals on the new pump. The wires must connect to the same terminals as the old pump.

    • 10

Fasten the kickplate to the front of the Kenmore frame with the screws removed in Step 2.

    • 11

Turn on the power to the dishwasher at the circuit breaker.
