Many adjustable pegs simply fold down, creating wider rows. In some cases, the pegs can be individually folded. In other dishwashers, the entire row must be pushed down. A few dishwashers have rows of pegs that slide to one side.
Peg clips are plastic clips that attach to the adjustable pegs, keeping them firmly in position. The clips are useful if you have a strong rinse cycle that may jar the pegs lose from their positions. To use the clips, fold down the pegs and then lock the clip into place over the pegs.
Over time, the protective coating on adjustable pegs may rub off -- especially if you are constantly adjusting them with every wash. The covering on stationary pegs can wear off also. The metal underneath the plastic coating might rust as a result. Instead of replacing the entire rack, consider purchasing a repair kit and re-coating the adjustable pegs yourself. In addition, sometimes the pegs come loose. In that case, you may have to replace the entire row of pegs or even the rack itself.
Minimize wear and tear on your pegs by alternating which individual or rows of pegs you adjust. Alternate between racks as well. In addition, avoid placing very heavy items on pegs that have been folded down, as there is a risk of breaking the pegs if done repeatedly.
