Kinked Drain Hose

• The drain hose is typically located underneath your kitchen sink or connected to the garbage disposal's drain and drains water from the dishwasher to the main drain. A kink in the drain occurs when the drain is improperly positioned and causes a pinch in the hose, which restricts water flow during the dishwasher's use. Additionally, use only a highly rated dishwasher detergent to prevent residue from clogging the drain hose.

Excess Water

• A dishwasher placed too high off of the floor restricts proper water drainage and requires manually draining water from the unicouple hose. The unicouple hose is located on the back of the dishwasher, and retains excess water until it is manually drained into a large bowl or dish.

Clogged Air Gap

• The air gap connects to the dishwasher and causes improper water drainage from the dishwasher when your main sink's drain is clogged. The air gap shuts off the connection between the main drain and the dishwasher to prevent water backup from the main drain. A disabled connection caused by the air gap results in a clogged dishwasher, as the air gap must be clear for the dishwasher to drain after a cycle.

Disposal

• If your dishwasher and home garbage disposal share a drain, it can become clogged if the disposal is filled to capacity. The disposal should be powered on shortly before using the dishwasher to clear out debris and prevent drain clogs.
