How to Change the Impeller in a Whirlpool Dishwasher

The wash impeller is a disc-like component that's located inside the pump and motor assembly in Whirlpool dishwashers. The purpose of the impeller is to force water up and through the dishwasher's spray arms. If the impeller breaks or gets clogged with food particles, you may hear a strange grinding noise as the component struggles to direct the water. Replacing the impeller should solve the problem. Changing the wash impeller in a Whirlpool dishwasher is an extensive process that isn't for the novice do-it-yourselfer. Consult a professional if you're not comfortable with the repair process.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the dishwasher from the wall outlet. Remove the two Phillips screws from the bottom toe panel. Remove the two additional Phillips screws from the access panel located just below the dishwasher door. Set aside the removed panels and screws. Take out the dishwasher racks and place them with the other removed components.

    • 2

Unscrew and remove the nozzle cap that holds the spray arm in place. Lift off the nozzle bearing and spray arm to reveal the top of the pump and motor assembly.

    • 3

Pull the retaining tabs on the clamp that holds the vertical water feed tube to the outlet nozzle on the pump and motor assembly. Remove the clamp and pull the end of the tube off of the nozzle.

    • 4

Reach underneath the dishwasher to access the lower portion of the pump and motor assembly. Pull firmly on the wiring harness plug to detach it from the motor harness. Rotate the four rubber clamps on the assembly inward 90 degrees.

    • 5

Pinch the clamp on the drain hose and slide it back. Remove the drain hose and unscrew the hose adapter; use a pan or towel to catch any water that spills from the hose.

    • 6

Pull the entire pump and motor assembly up through the inside of the dishwasher to remove it from the appliance.

    • 7

Remove the eight T-20 Torx screws that hold the pump outlet component to the top of the separator plate. Pull off the rubber pump outlet seal. Set the removed components to the side.

    • 8

Use an adjustable wrench to remove the screw that secures the impeller. Remove the impeller from the assembly. Insert the replacement impeller and reinstall the screw that holds it in place.
