My Frigidaire Dishwasher Float Assembly Is Leaking Underneath

A Frigidaire dishwasher's float assembly is designed to prevent the water level from rising to a point where it overflows. The assembly is on the bottom right or left of the bin. A leak from this area can indicate a problem with the door gasket, water valve or the float assembly itself.
  1. Float Assembly

    • The float assembly consists of a floating device that contains a switch. When the water-inlet valve opens, the float rises with the incoming water. Once the water reaches a certain level, the float's switch is triggered, which closes the water valve. This prevents overflowing water. If the float does not rise properly or the switch malfunctions, the dishwasher may overflow and leak. A professional is likely needed to repair the problem.

    Door Gasket

    • The door gasket is the seal that runs around the outside of the bin. It allows the door to close tightly and prevents water from leaking out around the edges. Over time, these seals get brittle and may crack or break. If the crack is in the lower right or left corner, it will appear as if water is leaking from beneath the float assembly. To repair this, pull out the old seal. Soak a new one in hot water for a few minutes until it is soft and flexible. Then press it firmly into the tank channel, which is the narrow trench that runs around the outer edge of the bin. Close the door, lock it and leave it closed for a couple of hours to allow a seal to form.

    Water Valve and Electrical Issues

    • The water valve, located just below the float assembly, allows water to flow into the dishwasher. The dishwasher's timer activates the valve. When that happens, water flows into the bin. If the timer malfunctions or the valve gets stuck in the open position, water may continue to flow into the dishwasher even after the float switch is activated. This will cause leaking and flooding. You may be able to reach in and manually move the valve, but if it's an electrical problem with the timer, you will probably need to call a professional.

    Other Considerations

    • If the water is coming from underneath the dishwasher, neither the float assembly, water valve nor door gasket is likely the cause. Instead, it is probably a leak in the water supply hoses. It could also be a leak in the seal that goes around the shaft of the motor that powers the water pump and spray arms. Excessive suds and a dishwasher that is not level can also cause water to leak, according to the Frigidaire website.
