Why Is My Westinghouse 905 Dishwasher Overfilling?

Frigidaire manufactured the Westinghouse 905 consumer dishwasher under the Electrolux appliances line. As you use this dishwasher over time, you might encounter a front leak caused by the appliance overfilling. When this occurs, you can take measures to troubleshoot and fix this problem on your own. No dishwasher expertise is required.
  1. Dirty Overfill Protector

    • The dishwasher is equipped with an overfill protector to prevent this type of problem from occurring. But it can get dirty and not perform as it is supposed to. Inspect the overfill protector inside the dishwasher to determine if it moves up and down easily. If not, it is dirty and needs cleaning. Clean with a household cleaner and a clean, dry cloth. The cleaner should have bleach or vinegar in it so that the buildup will dissolve.

    Dirty Seal

    • Open the dishwasher so that you have access to the seal. The seal goes around the dishwasher where the door meets it to close. Take a clean cloth and dampen it with hot water. Then wipe around the perimeter of the seal. Your leak might be a result of residue buildup around the seal. Cleaning the residue off the seal can stop the overfilling and leaking.

    Drain Clog

    • A dishwasher that cannot drain properly can result in what seems to be overfilling. This is because the water collecting in the dishwasher is too much for it to handle when the appliance operates. When this occurs, the problem is actually the clogged drain and not overfilling. Try using a household drain cleaner in the dishwasher to clear out the clog. If that does not work, you should consult a plumber to help you get it cleared.

    Fill Line Problem

    • A problem with the dishwasher fill line can also result in overfilling. You can either have a leak in the fill line, which results in too much water getting in the unit, or you can have a faulty fill line valve, which is designed to stop the water from filling when enough gets inside the machine. These are internal components, and you might need to consult a repair technician to safely gain access to them. If you are comfortable making the inspection and repair yourself, you can contact the manufacturer or a local appliance parts store for the necessary parts and a service manual, which instructs you on how to make the repair. You will need to disconnect water to the dishwasher and slide the machine out to gain access to the internal components via side entry into the appliance.
