Dishwasher Leaks From the Spinning Shaft

Main Tub Seal

• Your main tub sealer is the lining beneath the blades connected to the drive shaft. This seal is what prevents water from leaking out of the dishwasher and damaging the motor or the floor beneath. If your dishwasher is leaking from the spinning shaft, it is probably this main tub sealer that's leaking. You cannot repair this type of seal; you will need to replace it entirely.

Replacing Seal

• In order to replace the main tub seal, turn off power to your dishwasher and remove all other components. Take out the lower rack, and detach the spray arm blades and any supports that the spray arm has. The wash and drain impellers, the casings in which the spray arm rests, should then be visible. Remove them to access the seal in its housing. Take out the seal and replace it with a new version.

Water Supply Line

• The water supply line runs from the primary plumbing in your house and up into the water valve in your dishwasher, where water is spraying. This is near the spinning shaft, so a leak that appears to be originating from the shaft could actually be coming from the water supply line. The valve that connects the line to the dishwasher might need to be tightened in order to fix the problem.

Replacing Pump Situations

• Not all dishwashers have a vertical mount for their motor system. Some have horizontal mounts. These horizontal versions are more difficult to take apart and fix. In order to solve a leak from one of these components, you might need to buy a new pump and motor and replace them entirely.
