GE dishwashers have three different types of end caps -- depressed locking-tab end caps, release locking-tab end caps and front-tab end caps. Depressed locking-tab and release locking-tab end caps are found on classic GE dishwashers. Stainless-steel dishwashers use release locking-tab end caps.
Each type of end cap requires a different removal method. Insert a quarter in between the end-cap body and locking tab on the rack slide. Twist the cap backward with your free hand, just enough to free the locking tab from the rack slide. Then rotate the end cap counterclockwise to remove the end cap from the slide. For release locking-tab end caps, insert the tip of a Phillips screwdriver into the locking tab to release the end cap. Then pull the end cap out of the slide. For front-tab end caps, press against the locking tab in the front of the end cap with your finger, then pull the end cap off the rail.
Once the end cap is removed from the GE dishwasher, pull the old rack out of the slide. Ensure the rollers on the new rack are installed and firmly in place. Three different types of rollers are used with GE racks. Traditional rollers are secured in place with a screw, while the others are pushed onto the rack axle by hand. Without the rollers, the rack will not slide properly.
Ensure the rack slides are pulled all the way out. Line the back rollers on the rack into the corresponding slide. Push the rack into the slide, and then insert the front-rack rollers into the slides. Reinstall the end caps on each slide. The new rack is now installed.
