How to Wire a Fan Remote Control With 14/3 Wire

Nonmetallic electrical wire designated 14/3 consists of a black, a red, a white and a bare copper ground wire, all surrounded by a sheath of insulation. When a ceiling fan is wired with 14/3 nonmetallic cable, the black wire connects the ceiling fan to a switch that operates the fan motor, and the red wire connects the fan's light fixture to a switch that operates the light. When you wire a remote control into your fan, the red wire is no longer necessary -- the remote operates both the light and the fan motor from the home's power source, provided by a single switch.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to the ceiling fan by turning off the breaker in the main service panel. Set up your stepladder under the ceiling fan.

    • 2

Climb up your stepladder to the ceiling fan. Located the canopy at the top of the ceiling fan, next to the ceiling; it covers the electrical box and hanging bracket. Remove the canopy by removing the screws that hold it in place. This exposes the wiring connections between the ceiling fan and the ceiling electrical junction box.

    • 3

Disconnect the red, black, and white wires connected to the ceiling fan wires by untwisting and removing their wire connectors. Do not disconnect the bare copper wire from the green ground wire on the ceiling fan.

    • 4

Turn the remote control over. Remove the battery cover from the back of the control, exposing the dip switches. Locate the dip switches on the remote receiver, which will be wired to the fan and the ceiling box. Verify that the dip switches on the control and the dip switches on the receiver positions match.

    • 5

Look for and identify the two sets of wires on the remote receiver. The first set consists of a black, white and an additional wire labeled as the light kit; this set connects directly to the ceiling fan. The second set of wires consists of a black wire and a white wire. This set connects directly to the wires in the ceiling junction box.

    • 6

Twist a wire connector on the end of the red wire inside the ceiling junction box; it isn't needed any longer. Secure the connector to the wire by wrapping it with electrical tape.

    • 7

Connect the remote receiver to the remaining black and white wires inside the ceiling fan junction box. Connect the black wire from the second set of receiver wires with the black wire from the junction box. Twist an orange wire connector onto these two wires. Repeat this connection with the white wire from the second set of receiver wires and the white wire from the junction box.

    • 8

Wire the ceiling fan to the remote receiver. Pair the black wire from the ceiling fan and the black wire from the first set of receiver wires, connecting them together by twisting on an orange wire connector. Repeat this connection method for the white wire from the ceiling fan and the white wire from the first set of receiver wires. Connect the remaining wires from the ceiling fan and the first set of receiver wires by twisting an orange wire connector onto the two wires.

    • 9

Push all the wiring and the remote receiver into the ceiling junction box behind the hanging bracket. Replace the ceiling fan canopy.

    • 10

Remove the switch cover plate from the wall switches that operate the ceiling fan, exposing the wiring and the electrical box. Identify which switch has the red wire from the ceiling fan connected to it, and remove the screws holding that switch to the electrical box. Gently pull the switch from the electrical box. Loosen the screws on the right side of the switch to remove the red and black wires from beneath the screws.

    • 11

Place separate wire connectors onto the black and red wires you removed from the switch. Secure each connectors to its wire with electrical tape. Gently push these wires back into the electrical box and reattach the switch to the box. The switch should not have any wiring attached to it. Replace the switch cover plate to cover the switches and the electrical box.

    • 12

Turn on the electricity to the ceiling fan by turning on the breaker inside the main service panel. Test the remote for proper operation.
