How to Wire a Speed Switch on a Fan

You can control the speed of your fan by wiring a speed switch into your wall. This will give you limited control over the room temperature. Unlike built-in fan cords that require you to reach up, a speed switch lets you change the fan's speed as easily as you turn lights on and off.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off all electricity to any affected switches.

    • 2

Remove the existing switchplate cover with a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the existing on/off electrical switch, also by using a flat-head screwdriver.

    • 4

Gently pull the switch and its wiring out from the outlet box.

    • 5

Unscrew the wires from the terminals on the existing switch, again using a flat-head screwdriver. There will be two hot wires and a bare ground wire.

    • 6

      Discard the old switch.

    • 7

Attach the two hot wires to the new speed switch, using the switch's screw terminals.

    • 8

Attach the bare ground wire to the green grounding lug screw on the back of the switch.

    • 9

Gently push the wired switch assembly back into place in the electrical box.

    • 10

Using the flat-head screwdriver, reattach the cover plate.
