Direction of Fan Blades in Summer

Ceiling fans are used year round to help maintain comfortable temperatures. The direction of the fan blades will determine whether you feel a cooling effect or whether it is moving warm air from top of the room into your space.
  1. Summer Direction

    • Energy Star and the U.S. Department of Energy recommend ceiling fans rotate in a counterclockwise direction in the summer time. You should feel a cool breeze if you are under the fan.

    Effects

    • Ceiling fans, according to Consumer Reports, do not cool the actual space. The breeze, or wind chill effect, helps to keep you cooler only when you are in the room while the fan is running.

    Energy Savings

    • Energy Star suggests raising the temperature on the air conditioner while the fan is operating. This will help you use less electricity and save money on your cooling bills. Since the fan does nothing to cool the space, turn it off when you leave the room.
