How to Add Lights to a Ceiling Fan

To add lights to a ceiling fan, connect the lighting wire from the fan to the one from the ceiling fixture and then install a lighting kit onto the fan. You don't have to disassemble the fan to install lights. You can perform the installation with the fan intact. Adding lights isn't time-consuming, and it doesn't require a lot of work. The look of the fan with the lights installed is worth the effort.

Instructions

    • 1

Use the circuit breaker to turn off the electricity off in the room with the ceiling fan.

    • 2

Extract the screws that hold the canopy against the ceiling and let the canopy slide down the downrod. Now you have access to the fan wires.

    • 3

Connect the third and unoccupied wire from the fan to the unoccupied wire from the ceiling fixture.

    • 4

Replace the canopy and secure it with the screws.

    • 5

Twist the locking nut on the bottom of the fan counterclockwise to remove it and then remove the fan base cover to expose the lighting kit connectors on the bottom of the fan.

    • 6

Connect the wire assembly from the fan to the wire assembly from the lighting kit.

    • 7

Push the lighting kit onto the threaded rod hanging out of the bottom of the fan. Lock the lighting kit to the fan by securing the locking nut on the bottom of the lighting kit.

    • 8

Install light bulbs and light covers on the lighting kit.

    • 9

Turn the electricity on in the room where you're working and turn the wall switches on and off to see if the new lights work.
