How to Run a Four-Wire Romex From a Switch to a Ceiling Fan

Southwire manufactures a line of electrical cable called Romex which contains several wires in one insulated sheath. These wires can each carry a separate line, but with only one cable to run, which can greatly simplify the wire running process. Romex cable can be used for a variety of applications, but the correct technique is required for proper installation. If you are installing a ceiling fan, you can run a four-wire Romex cable to connect the switch to the fan with the right equipment and technique.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power to the area you will be working in at the main circuit breaker. If needed, you can test any wires with a voltage tester to assure they are not live.

    • 2

Pass the lead of the wire running kit through the wall behind the switch.

    • 3

Feed the lead of the wire running kit up the interior side of the wall, working your way towards the ceiling. When you hit the point where the wall meets the ceiling, work towards the ceiling fan.

    • 4

Pass the lead of the wire running kit through the opening in the ceiling behind the ceiling fan.

    • 5

Tape the end of the Romex cable to the lead of the wire running kit with electrical tape.

    • 6

Pull the wire running kit backward through the hole in the wall behind the switch, along with the Romex cable taped to it.

    • 7

Remove the electrical tape attaching the Romex cable to the wire running kit and set the wire running kit aside.

    • 8

Pull a few extra feet of Romex cable through the hole in the wall behind the switch.

    • 9

Cut the Romex cable at the ceiling fan end of the cable with a cable clippers. The four-wire Romex has been run from the switch to the ceiling fan and is now ready to be wired.
