Installation of a Roof Fan

A roof fan pulls hot air from the attic of a house to cool the attic and the interior of the house. Installing a roof fan is an effective way to cut energy costs. It can be very difficult to install a roof fan on homes with roofing material other than asphalt shingles, and it is recommended that a professional be hired for homes with roofing materials such as tile or wood shingle roof coverings. If you choose to do it yourself, roof fans and the tools needed for installation can be purchased from most online and local hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the size and style of your roof fan. There are a variety of styles and types of fans from which to choose. The size and power of the fan is largely determined by the size of the attic space that the fan will be ventilating.

    • 2

Determine the location to install the roof fan. The roof fan is most effective if it is installed in a position where the fan can evacuate the most hot air from the attic. This is usually located at the highest point of the roof where hot air collects. However, the shape and style of the roof should be considered, and it is recommended that, for aesthetic reasons, the fan be installed where it is concealed as much as possible.

    • 3

Enter the attic and drill a hole directly in the middle of two roof rafters where the center of the roof fan will be located.

    • 4

Locate the drilled hole on the top of the roof. The size of the hole needed in your roof to install the fan is not determined by the type or style of roof you have, but by the size of the fan and the opening required for the fan to effectively vent your attic. Measure the hole size as recommended by the fan manufacturer. Use a jigsaw to cut a circular hole in roof through the shingles and other roofing material. Remove any nails in the roof that will impede the installation of the roof fan where the flashing of the fan comes into contact with the roof.

    • 5

Slide the top of the fan flashing under the shingles and ensure the bottom half of the fan shielding rests on top of the shingles.

    • 6

Secure the roof fan to the roof with roofing nails.

    • 7

Install the fan wiring and the thermostat using a licensed electrician if necessary. You can check your local building codes to determine whether it is necessary to use a licensed electrician for this project. Roofing fans will have specific wiring instructions as specified by manufacturer’s requirements and instructions.
