How to Connect Downrod Extensions

Downrod extensions are necessary to lower ceiling fans to the appropriate height in a room regardless of the ceiling height. A fan that is approximately 8 to 9 feet from the floor allows the air to circulate to add comfort to the room. These extensions are available in sizes that accommodate any ceiling height from 9 to 20 feet. Connecting the downrod to the fixture takes only a few minutes of time and allows you to continue installing the ceiling fan according to the instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Hold the ceiling fan mount so that the ball faces the ceiling.

    • 2

Insert the lead wires through the canopy – the part that sits flush with the ceiling after the installation. Push the wires through the downrod extension as well.

    • 3

Push the downrod extension into the raised section of the mount. This is the collar yoke.

    • 4

Twist the downrod extension until the holes match up with the ones on the collar yoke.

    • 5

Push the connector pin through the holes until it comes out the other side.

    • 6

Slide a cotter pin through the end of the connector pin.

    • 7

Bend the wires on the cotter pin so they prevent the connector pin from coming out.

    • 8

Tighten the locknuts or setscrews with a pair of pliers. Continue installing the ceiling fan according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
