How to Wire a Lutron S2-LF

The Lutron S2-LF is a variable dual fan/light control. It allows for dimming control of a light and variable fan control from the same location. It is a single-gang switch, which means it fits in a normal-sized single-gang electrical box, combining what would be two separate switches into one 2.75-by-4.5-inch combination dual-slider switch. Wiring the switch is fairly easy if you have isolated the fan switch leg from the light switch leg.

Things You'll Need

  • Combination screwdriver
  • Non-contact voltage tester
  • Wire strippers
  • Yellow wire connectors
  • Vinyl electrical tape

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the fan/light circuit power by identifying the correct circuit breaker and flipping it off. If you are replacing an old switch, remove the old cover plate and switch by backing out the mounting screws. Confirm that power is off by probing all of the wires in the box where the switch will be mounted with a non-contact voltage tester.

    • 2

Identify the wire that will control the light, and the wire that controls the fan in the box where the switch will be mounted. On new installations, there should be three wires going to the ceiling box: black, white and red. The white is the neutral. The black and red control the light and fan, or vice versa. If you are replacing an old switch and can't identify the wires that lead to the fan/light, have a licensed electrician identify the two independent switch leg wires that connect the switch with the fan/light.

    • 3

Identify the incoming power feed wire. If this wire is not labeled, then perform a test. Make sure all the black and red wires in the box have no power, and the spliced ends are covered with a wire connector or piece of electrical tape. Turn the power to the circuit back on. Test each wire separately with the voltage tester. The tester will beep and light up when it is placed close to a hot wire. One wire should register as hot. This is the incoming feed. Turn the power to the circuit back off. Mark the wire with a piece of white electrical tape with the word "hot" written on it.

Connect the neutral wires in the box together using a wire connector. Strip back the ends of each white wire 1/2 inch. Place the ends of the wires under the wire connector, and twist clockwise until you feel the wires twisting together.

    • 5

Connect the green ground wire on the S2-LF to the bare copper or green ground wire in the box using a wire connector.

    • 6

Connect the black wire on the S2-LF to the labeled hot wire using a wire connector.

    • 7

Connect the yellow wire on the control to the wire controlling the fan.

    • 8

Connect the red wire on the control to the wire controlling the light.

    • 9

Mount the control to the box using the 6-32 machine screws provided with the control. If you have difficulty fitting the wires in the box, especially if you are replacing an old switch in an old box, you will need to hire an electrician to determine your options. Do not attempt to cram the S2-LF into a box that is too small or too full of wires.

    • 10

Align the control in the box. Make sure it is plumb and level and tighten the mounting screws. Flip the circuit breaker controlling the circuit back on and test the switch. If the fan and light are reversed, turn the power off to the circuit and remove the new combo switch. The connections you made in step 7 and 8 will have to be reversed.

Install the wallplate. The wallplate is two pieces. The back wallplate connects to the switch with the 6-32 machine screws provided. The finish wallplate snaps into place and requires no screws. Install the back wallplate and make sure that it is flush with the wall. Install the finish wallplate.
