Which Direction Is Best for a Ceiling Fan?

Ceiling fans add a decorative and functional feature to your home. Ceiling fans are useful during the warm summer months and also during the winter if your model has reversible blades. During the summer, a ceiling fan effectively cools the occupants of a room. Switching the directions of the blades forces warm air near the ceiling down into the room, warming the occupants during cold weather. It is important to know which direction the blades need to turn during the different seasons.
  1. Warm Weather Months

    • The ceiling fan blades should turn in a counter-clockwise motion, or with the blades pointing downward, in the warm summer months. When you are standing directly underneath the fan, you still be able to feel a cool breeze.

    Cool Weather Months

    • Reverse the direction of the fan blades once cool weather hits your section of the country. Warm air rises; therefore, switching the blades to a clockwise direction helps scoop the warmed air down into the room. Use a low speed on your fan to provide warmth in the room rather than a breeze.

    Ceiling Fan Sizes

    • Ceiling fans have different sized fan blades. Choosing the correct size ensures optimal air flow in the room. Small rooms, such as bathrooms or rooms less than 75 square feet, only need a fan blade of 36 inches. A fan blade span of 36 to 42 inches is appropriate for a room that is no larger than 225 square feet. Larger fan blades, such as the 50- to 54-inch models, are appropriate for large bedrooms or living rooms. If the room is long and narrow, using two smaller ceiling fans, one near each end of the room, may make it more comfortable.

    Height from Ceiling

    • To create optimal air flow, the ceiling fan needs to be within 8 or 9 feet of the ceiling area. If the ceiling is too high or vaulted, use an extendable downrod to get to the correct height.
