How to Run a Ceiling Fan for Heat

Ceiling fans provide air circulation in your home. They can be a decorative as well as functional feature in the room. Many people think that the use of ceiling fans is only for cooling the occupants of a room in warm weather months. But if you have a model that has reversible blades, then your ceiling fan can be helpful in warming the occupants of a room during colder months as well. Since ceiling fans use less energy than air conditioners or furnaces, they are a viable option for reducing the cost of your utility bill.

Instructions

    • 1

Position a sturdy chair, stepladder or a ladder underneath your ceiling fan.

    • 2

Ask an assistant to hold the stepladder or other object steady while you switch the fan blades.

    • 3

Locate the switch on the inside or top of the motor housing.

    • 4

Adjust the switch so that the fan blades turn facing upward or in a clockwise motion. The lower edge of the fan blades should be the leading edge when the fan turns. This creates an updraft in the room, thus forcing the warm air near the ceiling to the corners of the room and down the walls to the floor. This works most effectively on a low-speed setting; too high a setting can create a cooling breeze, regardless of the updraft.
