How to Connect Receptacle Wiring for a Ceiling Fan

Installing a ceiling fan can help make your home more comfortable and energy efficient by blowing a cooling breeze during the summer and driving warm air downward during the winter. One step in installing a ceiling fan is connecting the wiring of the fan to the wires extending out from the electrical box. These wires lead to your home's main electrical box. Connecting the wiring is a fairly straightforward process, but because you're dealing with electricity, you must take safety precautions.

Instructions

    • 1

Test the wires extending from the ceiling with a voltage tester to ensure that the line is dead. If you get a reading, turn off the power to the circuit at your main electrical box and test the wires again.

    • 2

Lift the fan into position and hang it from a hook or the mounting bracket if you don't have an assistant to hold it.

    • 3

Connect the green grounding wire from the fan to the grounding wire coming from your home's electrical box. The grounding wire leading from the box may be green, or it may be bare. Twist the ends of the wires together with your hands to join them, then slide a plastic connector cap over the wires and twist the connector cap several times.

Connect the white wire from the fan to the white wire from your home's electrical box with the plastic connector cap, then connect the two black wires.

    • 5

Slide the fan into position against the ceiling, tucking the wires into the electrical box in the ceiling. Attach the fan to the ceiling.
