How to Troubleshoot a Hampton Bay Fan

Hampton Bay fans are a popular choice for many homeowners. They come in a variety of designs and finishes and are known for their reliability and durability. There are times, however, when a Hampton Bay fan malfunctions. Before calling a repairman, try troubleshooting the problem yourself. The issue may be a simple one that you can address without the cost of a service call. As always, refer to the user manual for your specific Hampton Bay fan.

Make sure the fan controls are functioning. Pull the pull chain to see whether the fan operates at the high, medium and low speeds described in the user manual. Check the reverse switch on the fan housing by setting it forward and then backward to see whether the fan blades move clockwise and then counterclockwise.

Check the remote for the fan to see whether it is functioning. If not, replace the battery and try using it again.

    • 3

Make sure both the fan and the light (if you have one) are working. If both are not, you may have a connection issue. Pull the fan housing down from the ceiling. You may need to use a screwdriver to loosen the housing. Look at the wires to make sure that they are not damaged or frayed and that they are all connected properly. Also check the circuit breaker for the circuit that runs the fan. If it has tripped, try flipping it back on. If it trips again, you may have a short circuit in the fan.

Check that the blades are turning freely. If not, a bearing could be stuck, the flywheel could be broken or debris could be lodged in the motor or blades. Open up the motor housing using the screwdriver to remove the screws holding it in place. Turn the motor slowly by hand and listen for noise. If you hear anything, look for any objects that may be coming into contact with the rotor.

Look to see whether the connection between the power source and the light kit of the fan is working but the light is not. Look to see that the red/blue/black and white striped wires are connected to the power source. The white wire should be connected to the white wire(s) inside the switch housing as well.

Make sure the fan is stable and not wobbling. If so, bend the blades by hand to a shallower pitch, but do so carefully so you don't crack the blades.
