I Can't Install a Ceiling Fan. Any Alternatives?

A ceiling fan is not the only way to move the air in a modern home. Ceiling fans are often a convenient way to give a boost to the heating and cooling system in your home. This versatile small appliance can typically be set to push air downward or suck it upward toward the ceiling. When installation of a ceiling fan is not possible, there are other affordable options.
  1. Window Fans

    • When a ceiling fan is not possible, window fans may be the solution. Window fans require little to no effort to install in many cases. The fan sits on the open window sill and is often held in place by the weight of the window closed on the top. The fan may be turned to pull in air or blow it out of the room. Fans specifically designed to fit a window may require some installation, similar to a window air conditioning unit. These fans are not intended to be taken in and out of a window, but instead left there permanently or at least for an entire season.

    Attic Fans

    • For a house with an attic, an attic fan is a viable alternative to ceiling fans. The units are installed in the wall of the attic and are designed to pull air out of the space. This pulling action creates airflow throughout the home. The units are installed permanently and may require additional vent placement throughout the attic. A drawback to this option may be cost. Professional installation is typically required, as large-scale cutting of walls and wiring is involved. The fan needs to be covered in cold weather and can allow access to the attic to small wild animals such as squirrels and raccoons.

    Floor Fans

    • For a temporary or occasional increase in a home's airflow, floor fans are an option. Similar to a ceiling fan in its movement of air, a floor fan may be quickly moved from room to room or left in an ideal spot for circulation. Floor fans may assist in blowing cool air from an air conditioning unit, or create a suction out of a room for heating systems. Oscillating fans create a multiple-direction movement of air and are available in compact designs. Simple floor fans are an affordable option for those unable to install a window fan.

    Natural Air Flow

    • When a ceiling fan is not available, using doors and windows to increase airflow may be the best option. Screens make it possible to open windows and doors without letting in unwanted pests such as bugs and small animals. Experimentation with the natural flow of air may be needed. Open opposite windows in a room, or several windows and a door to find the best flow of air.
