Can You Replace the Pull String on a Ceiling Fan Light?

Ceiling fan pull strings or chains hang from the fixture at a height low enough that you can reach up and grab them. These pull chains control the lighting portion of the fan. Pull chain or string replacement is one of the most common ceiling fan repairs and it can be done by the average do-it yourselfer.
  1. Function

    • The pull string light switch on your ceiling fan turns on and off the lighting feature of the fixture. If your ceiling fan has two- or three-stage lighting the pull string switch will also allow you to change the level of your lighting. One pull will turn the light on at the dimmest level. Two pulls will switch the light to the mid level, and three pulls will switch the light to the brightest level. If pulled a fourth time, the switch will return the light to the off position. Many ceiling fans are controlled by wall switches as well. These wall switches control the flow of current to the fan, and will override pull string switches.

    Why it Breaks

    • Pull string or chain ceiling fan light switches can break with rough use or just over time. Strings which are positioned just out of reach are more likely to incur greater downward pressure when used as people must stretch to do so and may unintentionally hang on a bit.

    How to Change

    • If you have a broken pull chain switch, it can be changed without too much effort. You will need to locate the switch housing on the exterior of the fan and remove any cover plate. With the switch exposed, try to reconnect the chain or string as it was. If the anchor or the switch is broken beyond repair, you will have to remove the switch itself and visit the local home improvement center or ceiling fan outlet. Show the professionals at the store your broken switch and have them order you a new one. Reinstall the switch, making sure to attach the wiring as it was. If you are going to attempt to reconnect or change your ceiling fan pull string light switch, make sure the power to your fan has been completely turned off before you begin the process.

    Other Common Repairs

    • Unbalanced wobbling and the sound it produces is another common ceiling fan issue. Ceiling fans will often become unbalanced due to different blade shapes or sizes. This problem can be fixed by measuring the blades of your fan and placing those of similar sizes opposite each other. The slope of each blade can cause differences in wind resistance, which will also effect balance. Blade balancing kits which use weights and braces are sold to address this issue. The point of attachment between your ceiling fan and the ceiling itself is another possible cause of fan wobble. If the screws that hold the fan to the mounting brackets or the electrical box are loose or missing, heavy wobble may result.
