Do It Yourself Balancing for Shaking in Ceiling Fans

A shaking ceiling fan not only looks bad, it is also noisy and fails to circulate the air properly throughout the room. It is quite common for a frequently used ceiling fan to come out of balance and start shaking. The solution does not require you to purchase an entirely new ceiling fan. In most cases, simply tightening the screws holding the blades to the motor will stop the shaking. If that does not work, you will need to purchase and install a fan balancing kit.

Instructions

    • 1

Tighten the screws securing the fan blades to the motor with a Phillips screwdriver. Turn the fan on at the highest speed to see if the shaking stopped.

    • 2

Hold a yardstick perpendicular against a ceiling fan blade if tightening the screws didn't work. Observe the angle of the blade against the yardstick. Hold the yardstick up to the next fan blade. If the angle does not match, use your hands to gently bend the fan blade to match the angle. Repeat with the remaining fan blades. Turn the ceiling fan on to the highest speed to see if the shaking stopped.

    • 3

Select the fan blade you believe is causing the shaking. Slide the supplied weighted clip, from the balancing kit, onto the blade's low edge near the middle. Turn the ceiling fan on the highest setting and see if the weight solved your problem. If the shaking has improved but is not gone, slide the clip either up or down along the fan blade's edge. Then turn the fan on to see if that eliminates the shaking. Continue making adjustments, by sliding the clip either up or down along the fan blade's edge, until the fan no longer shakes.

Move the clip to a different blade if the weight clip does not seem to improve the shaking. Place the clip in the middle of the fan blade's low edge and turn the fan on to the highest setting. Follow the instructions in Step 3 to adjust the clip along the fan blade's edge to stop the shaking.

Continue moving the clip to different blades and sliding it up and down the blades' edges until you locate the position which eliminates the shaking.

Peel the paper backing off the weight supplied in the balancing kit. The weight goes on the fan blade with the clip. Center the weight over the fan blade's upper surface and line it up with the clip. Press it firmly onto the fan blade and remove the clip.
