How to Install a Thermo Coupling on a Space Heater

A thermo coupling is a heat-activated switch found on many gas appliances, including space heaters, which are typically fueled by propane gas. The thermo coupling sends a signal to open the gas valve inside the space heater, for a pilot to ignite the burner assembly. Because it is exposed to heat continuously while the space heater is in operation, the thermo coupling may wear out faster than other parts. If the part stops working, the space heater will not ignite.

Instructions

    • 1

Switch the control knob on the space heater to the "Off" position and turn the knob on the top of the connected propane tank clockwise until tight. Let the heater fall to room temperature if it has been in operation.

    • 2

Remove the screws in the access cover on the side or back of the heater, using the screwdriver. Look inside the compartment to locate the pilot, which is a curved or V-shaped tube, and the gas valve, which is attached to the burner assembly. The thermo coupling is a cylinder between the pilot and valve. The part is attached to the space heater by two screws.

    • 3

Loosen the screw on each side of the thermo coupling to take out the hooked wire attached on each end to the thermo coupling. Remove the defective part, making a note of the direction in which the smaller end connects to the space heater terminal.

    • 4

Hook the wires on each end of the new thermo coupling under their respective screw heads, in the same orientation as the original part. Tighten the screws.

    • 5

Reattach the access cover to the side or back of the space heater using the screws and screwdriver.

    • 6

Turn the knob on the propane tank counterclcokwise to release gas to the space heater, which can now be started in the usual manner specific to your appliance. For many space heaters, push in and turn the control knob on the side or rear of the appliance to "Ignite" and press the knob until the burner ignites. This typically takes at least 30 seconds.
