How to Change Drive Blades in a Frigidaire Ice Maker

The drive blade on a Frigidaire ice maker is a rectangular metal part that rotates to push cubed or crushed ice forward. If the blade wears out or becomes bent, it must be replaced for the ice maker to work properly. Because of the Frigidaire ice maker's modular construction, it is not necessary to disassemble the unit completely to reach the drive blade, which is at the back of the ice maker. Replacing the part takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the Frigidaire's power cord from the wall and open the freezer door to access the ice maker.

    • 2

Extract the screws holding the face cover on the ice maker to pull off the cover.

    • 3

Pull out the U-shaped retainer clip with pliers and slide off the metal washer behind the clip. Slide the ice maker forward.

    • 4

Twist off the plastic nut on the tip of the corkscrew-shaped auger using gentle pressure with the pliers.

    • 5

Extract the four screws holding the cover on the back of the ice maker around the auger, using a screwdriver. Slide the cover forward.

    • 6

Slide off the metal and plastic spacers from the auger one at a time. Make a note of their position on the auger so you can replace them later in the correct order.

    • 7

Remove the screws holding the support panel on the end of the ice bin below the auger.

    • 8

Pull out the auger to slide off the drive blade behind it. Place the new blade in the same position on the auger and insert the auger into the opening on the back of the ice maker.

    • 9

Replace the screws in the support panel for the auger and ice bin.

    • 10

Slide the metal and plastic spacers onto the auger in reverse order of their removal.

    • 11

Attach the back cover to the ice maker with the screws and twist the plastic nut onto the threaded tip of the auger.

    • 12

Slide the washer onto the end of the auger and secure it with the U-shaped retainer clip, which fits in a groove on the front.

    • 13

Re-attach the front cover with screws.

    • 14

Plug in the Frigidaire power cord.
