Repairing Kenmore Dishwashers

The Kenmore name is known nationwide for producing different types of home appliances, including dishwashers. Most dishwasher problems, including those for Kenmore models, can be linked to the machine either not filling up or not draining. Before you spend a lot of money on repairs, try troubleshooting some common problems with your machine.

Instructions

  1. Dishwasher Not Draining

    • 1

Locate the drain hose where it connects the sink to the garbage disposal. Use a screwdriver to disconnect the clamp connecting the hose to the garbage disposal. Any obstructions within the hose should be removed. Run a cup of hot water through the hose to wash out any debris you may have missed. Reconnect the hose, making sure to screw in the clamp as tight as possible.

    • 2

Check the sink trap for any possible clogs. Turn on your faucet and run cold water down the drain. While the water is running, turn on the garbage disposal and let it run for about a minute before turning it back off. Continue to run the water for another 30 seconds. If the sink backs up, there is a clog in the trap. Once the clog is removed, the dishwasher should begin draining.

    • 3

Clean out the strainer in the bottom of the dishwasher. Twist the plastic knob on the top of the strainer to remove it. Clean it out thoroughly by running hot water over it. Verify there are no obstructions within the drain opening.

    Dishwasher Not Filling

    • 4

Check the water inlet hose for any kinks. Sometimes an air pocket will enter the hose, causing the hose to fold in on itself. Make sure to unfold the hose so it is straight and the water can flow freely.

    • 5

Open the dishwasher door and close it firmly to make sure it is latched securely. If the door is open even the slightest bit, the dishwasher won’t begin filling with water. Over time, the door latch becomes loose from overuse. If you notice that the latch isn’t properly in place, loosen the two screws holding it in place. Fiddle around with the latch until it is properly lined up before tightening the screws.

    • 6

Check the water inlet valve for any traces of debris or other deposits that could cause a disruption in the water supply going to the dishwasher. Turn off the connection to the water supply and find the valve located behind the toe paneling of the machine.

    • 7

Take out the toe paneling according to the instruction manual for your model. Remove the inlet hose connected to the valve and check for any deposits. If you find any, use a small toothbrush or a toothpick to clean the screen.
