Kenmore Range Broiler Will Not Turn Off

Your range is a significant fire hazard if the broiler doesn’t turn off. Unplug it as soon as you notice the broiler continuing to heat up even switching it off. Don’t attempt to use the broiler until you’ve fixed the oven. Because this problem can cause home fires, contact a professional for repairs if you’re unable to fix it yourself.
  1. Automatic Control

    • Newer Kenmore ovens have an automatic control that enables the oven to reach a certain temperature for a certain amount of time. If you’ve accidentally set the automatic control, the broiler won't turn off until the time runs out or you press cancel. If the automatic control is faulty, it also might not register that the time has run out, so the broiler won’t turn off. Replace the electric control board if this is the case.

    Broken Thermostat

    • If your oven’s thermostat is broken, the broiler may not reach the correct temperature and heat setting. Thus the broiler will continue to heat up and may not turn off until you cut electricity to the range. Test and replace the thermostat as soon as possible once you discover this is an issue with your oven.

    Broken Selector Switch

    • The selector switch is the electrical mechanism that receives the temperature signal from the thermostat and sends it to the oven control panel to turn off the broiler once it's reached the proper temperature. If the thermostat is working but the selector switch is broken, the oven’s broiler won't turn off. Test and replace the selector switch, if possible.

    Faulty Control

    • If the "Cancel" button on your oven control panel is broken, you won't be able to turn off the broiler or the oven. You also won't be able to turn off the timer, self-clean or any other mechanism on the Kenmore range. Replace the switch if this is the case.
