How to Replace a Washer Door Cover on a Whirlpool Duet

Whirlpool Duet front-loading washers are high-efficiency, large-capacity, residential appliances that offer multiple washing cycles and temperature settings. The rubber door cover on the Whirlpool Duet washer is what makes the tub watertight. If water has started leaking from the door during operation, the rubber door cover must be replaced. Replacing the door cover on a Whirlpool Duet washer requires the disassembly of the appliance cabinet.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Whirlpool Duet washer from the grounded electrical outlet. Close the valves that supply the hot and cold water to the appliance.

    • 2

Open the detergent dispenser and press the retaining tab at the back of the drawer. Slide the drawer from its housing to reveal the recessed screw on the left edge of the control console. Remove the recessed screw, using a T-20 screwdriver.

    • 3

Remove the three T-20 screws on the back of the washer top. Lift the top panel off of the machine. Reach behind the control console and unplug the ribbon connectors from the central control unit. Grasp the plastic connectors and pull firmly; do not pull the ribbon wires themselves.

    • 4

Press the release tab on the right side of the control console. Open the washer door and locate the notch on the bottom of the console. Insert the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the notch and apply pressure to release the retaining tab securing the console to the washer cabinet. Pull the control console away from the appliance and set it on a padded surface.

    • 5

Remove the two screws on the bottom edge of the toe access panel, using the T-20 screwdriver. Lift the panel slightly and pull it forward to separate it from the washer cabinet.

    • 6

Open the washer door and remove the retaining wire from the perimeter of the rubber door cover. Stretch the tension spring at the bottom of the wire until it is loose enough to remove.

    • 7

Peel the rubber cover away from the door opening and fold it inside the washer tub. Remove the three T-20 screws surrounding the door switch on the edge of the door opening. Reach behind the edge of the door opening and lift the door switch assembly up, then out, of its housing. Unclip the wires from the back of the assembly.

    • 8

Take out the T-20 screws along the top and bottom edges of the front panel. Grasp both sides of the panel and pull firmly to remove it from the appliance.

    • 9

Find the retaining clamp screw on the left side of the tub opening. Turn the screw counterclockwise to loosen the clamp. Slide the clamp off of the rubber door cover and remove the cover from the front of the tub.

    • 10

Remove the plastic cap from the window washer tube. Slip the tube through the hole in the new door cover and replace the cap. Fit the door cover onto the front of the tub and replace the retaining clamp.
