How to Replace the Wire on the Door Seal of a Maytag Epic

The Maytag Epic is a Whirlpool-manufactured, residential, front-loading washing machine with a large-capacity wash basket and a noise-reduction feature. The washer has a rubber seal, known as a boot, around the door opening to prevent water from spilling out of the tub. Whirlpool uses a retaining wire and tension spring component to hold the rubber door seal in place. If the retaining wire is damaged, the seal may start to separate from the door opening. Replacing the retaining wire is a simple task that can be completed in less than five minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the washer from its power source before removing or replacing any components.

    • 2

Open the washer door. Locate the retaining wire component around the perimeter of the door seal. Locate the tension spring portion of the retaining wire at the bottom of the door opening.

    • 3

Insert needle-nose pliers or the tip of a flat-head screwdriver into the hooks at either end of the tension spring. Pull the hook to gently stretch the tension spring. Remove the retaining wire from the door seal.

    • 4

Line up the replacement retaining wire with the door seal. Position the retaining wire so that the tension spring is at the bottom of the door opening. Fit the retaining wire around the top of the door seal. Stretch the tension spring. Slip the rest of the retaining wire around the bottom of the seal.
