How to Hook Up a High Limit Thermostat on a Dryer

A high-limit thermostat regulates the heat produced by a clothes dryer so the temperature remains consistent at any chosen drying cycle. The thermostat is bolted to the casing for the heating element in the rear of the appliance and connected by two wires to the control panel. If the thermostat wears out, the dryer may not heat properly, until the part is replaced. It cannot be repaired.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the dryer's power cord from the electric socket.

    • 2

Unscrew the clamp screw holding the hose on the back of the appliance, using a screwdriver. Pull off the hose.

    • 3

Take out the screws holding the metal panel on the back of the cabinet to remove the panel. Looking inside the dryer, locate the metal box for the heating element. The box is typically rectangular or oval and mounted vertically. On GE dryers, the case is round.

    • 4

Remove the screws holding the mounting plate for the high-limit thermostat where it is mounted on the left side of the metal case, near the bottom.

    • 5

Pull off the two wires on the thermostat by holding the metal clip on the end of each wire.

    • 6

Connect the wires to the new thermostat in the same way they attached to the old part.

    • 7

Fasten the thermostat to the metal case with two screws.

    • 8

Reattach the back panel to the cabinet with the screws.

    • 9

Push the end of the hose onto the pipe near the bottom of the appliance on the back and secure it by tightening the screw in the clamp.

    • 10

Connect the power cord to the wall outlet.
