How to Change the Water Pump on a Kenmore Front Loading Washing Machine

The water pump on a Kenmore front-loading washing machine operates a little differently than a traditional top-loading washer. The pump has its own motor with an internal impeller. It attaches to the pump housing to drain the water from the washer. Should an item get caught between the pump filter and the impeller, the water pump can be damaged. At the end of the wash cycle and after the spin cycle you find standing water in the washtub, chances are your water pump has failed and must be changed.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug your Kenmore front-loading washing machine from the wall outlet behind the washer.

    • 2

Open the washer door. Use needle nose pliers to grasp the spring on the boot seal clamp around the washer opening. You can find the clamp hidden behind the rubber seal around the washing machine opening. Pull the clamp from the boot seal.

    • 3

Grasp the rubber boot seal around the washing machine opening with your fingers. Peel the seal away from the opening and push it back into the washtub.

    • 4

Reach inside the washer and find the door latch switch. Depending on how your washer opens, you can locate the switch on the right or left side of the door opening. Find the wiring harness attached to the bottom of the switch. Squeeze the tabs on the wiring harness and gently pull the wires from the door latch switch.

    • 5

Shut the washing machine door and open the pump filter cover located at the bottom left-hand corner on your Kenmore front-loading washer. Pull the drainage tube, located to the left of the filter, from its clip.

    • 6

Remove the Phillips head screw from beneath the filter cover. This releases the pump filter cover from the washing machine and exposes the lower panel mounting screw behind the cover. Remove this screw from your Kenmore washing machine.

    • 7

Access the rear of the washing machine and remove the two screws from the right and left side of the top panel. Slide the top panel back towards you. Lift the top of the cabinet up and off the Kenmore washing machine.

    • 8

Pull out the detergent and fabric softener dispenser drawer located at the top left of your Kenmore front-loading washing machine. Press down on the center tab inside the detergent dispenser to release the dispenser from the machine.

    • 9

Remove the two Phillips screws from both the right and lift sides of the dispenser opening on the front panel. Remove the Phillips head screw from the back of the control panel's right side. Start on the left side of the control panel, and work towards your right, gently unsnapping the panel from the Kenmore washer.

    • 10

Lift the control panel up and place it gently on top of the washer to expose the five screws holding the front panel onto the washer. Remove the five Phillips screws along the top lip of the front panel, and then carefully lift the panel up and off the front of the Kenmore washer cabinet.

    • 11

Remove the screws securing the pump assembly to the mounting bracket at the bottom left of your Kenmore washer. Reach beneath the pump housing and press the small tab that holds the pump to the floor of the washer. Pull the pump free from the mounting bracket.

    • 12

Pull the two wires from the left side of the washing machine’s pump motor. Remove the three Phillips head screws holding the pump motor to the pump housing. Pull the pump motor off the pump housing and discard.

    • 13

Install the replacement pump onto the pump housing. Replace the three screws you removed from the original pump. Reconnect the two wires to the back of the new pump motor. Snap the pump assembly back into the floor the washer.

    • 14

Reassemble your Kenmore front-loading washing machine by reversing the disassembly steps.
