How to Remove the Retainer From the Rewind Assembly on a Toro Snowblower

Toro snowblowers make the back-breaking task of shoveling snow-covered walkways and driveways a thing of the past. Many Toro snowblower models use a pull-string rewind, or recoil, assembly to start the engine. If the rewind starter malfunctions or the pull-string breaks, you can remove the assembly from the snowblower for troubleshooting or replacement. The rewind assembly is held to the snowblower engine with a retainer bracket that must be removed to access the component.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the fuel cap and insert a siphon pump hose into the fuel tank. Pump the fuel into a gas-safe can. Place a piece of duct tape over the fuel tank opening to prevent debris from falling into the tank while you're performing repairs.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the upper shroud, using a hex-head screwdriver; the number of screws varies by model. Lift the upper shroud off the snowblower to reveal the engine and starter assemblies. Set the removed shroud aside.

    • 3

Find the rewind starter assembly on the right-hand side of the motor. Remove the locknut securing the rewind assembly to the retainer bracket, using a lock-nut socket wrench.

    • 4

Remove the hex-head screws that hold the retainer bracket to the rewind starter assembly. Pull the retainer bracket off the starter shaft and set it aside.

    • 5

Pull the rewind assembly off the starter shaft to troubleshoot, repair or replace it.
