Taking Out the Door Boot on a Kenmore

The Whirlpool Corporation manufactures a line of front-loading, energy-efficient residential washing machines under the Kenmore brand name. These front-loading washers have a rubber component known as a boot or bellows around the door opening to prevent water from escaping the tub. As the rubber door boot ages, it can develop cracks or tears. If you see water leaking from cracks or tears in the door boot, it's time for a replacement. The disassembly process necessary to remove the door boot of a Kenmore washer is extensive.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet and switch off the circuit breaker that supplies the electricity to the washer. Close the water supply valve.

    • 2

Pull the washer away from the wall so you can stand behind it. Remove the three Phillips screws on the rear edge of the top panel. Lift the top panel straight up to separate it from the washer cabinet. Lean the removed top panel against the side of the appliance.

    • 3

Open the detergent dispenser drawer on the front of the machine. Press the release tab behind the detergent compartment and pull the drawer out of its housing. Remove the recessed Phillips screw to the left of the detergent dispenser housing.

    • 4

Pull on the plastic wiring connectors to detach the wires from the back of the control console. Use a flat-head screwdriver to apply pressure to the plastic retaining clips around the edges of the control console until they release. Remove the control console and set it aside.

    • 5

Remove the three hex-head screws along the bottom edge of the lower front access panel. Pull the panel down and toward you to separate it from the washer cabinet.

    • 6

Open the washer door and locate the retaining wire tension spring wrapped around the front of the rubber door boot. Remove the retaining wire tension spring, using a small flat-head screwdriver; work carefully to avoid damaging the tension spring.

    • 7

Peel the front of the rubber door boot away from the edges of the door opening and fold it back inside the washer so you can access the door switch assembly. Remove the two T-20 Torx door switch assembly screws. Slide the assembly from its housing and detach the wires connected to the back of the component.

    • 8

Close the washer door. Remove the four hex-head screws that secure the front panel to the washer cabinet. Pull the front panel away from the washer and lean it against a wall.

    • 9

Locate the clamp that holds the rubber boot to the front of the washer tub. Turn the retaining clamp screw counterclockwise until the clamp is loose enough to remove. Slip off the retaining clamp and remove the door boot.
