Removing the Pulley From a Front-Load Washing Machine Shaft

Front-loading residential washing machines use a belt and pulley assembly to rotate the washer tub during the spin cycle. If the tub has trouble spinning, it may indicate a faulty basket pulley or belt component. You can remove the basket pulley assembly to troubleshoot, repair or replace it. In front-loading washers, the basket pulley is held to the tub with a retaining nut. Removing this nut allows you to free the basket pulley from the shaft on the back of the washer tub.

Things You'll Need

  • Hex-head screwdriver
  • Crescent wrench
  • 21-millimeter socket wrench

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the washing machine from the electrical outlet. Turn the water supply valve to the "Off/Closed" position.

    • 2

Pull the front-load washing machine away from the wall to access the rear panel. Remove the screws securing the panel to the appliance cabinet by using a hex-head screwdriver. Grab the sides of the rear panel and pull it toward you to remove it.

    • 3

Unhook the drive belt from the drive motor assembly located in the bottom right-hand corner of the washing machine cabinet. Remove the drive belt from the basket pulley on the back of the washer tub.

    • 4

Slide the handle of a crescent wrench through the basket pulley and into the steel bearing hub at the center of the pulley assembly. The wrench prevents the pulley from spinning while you're removing it.

    • 5

Remove the nut that secures the basket pulley to the back of the washer tub by using a 21-millimeter socket wrench. Reserve the nut for reassembly.

    • 6

Unplug the ground wire from the steel bearing hub. Remove the crescent wrench from the basket pulley assembly.

    • 7

Pull the basket pulley toward you to remove it from the shaft on the back of the washer tub.
