How to Install a Whirlpool Float & Retainer Assembly for a Dishwasher

A Whirlpool dishwasher comes with a small safety device that ensures your dishwasher will not overfill with water and flood your kitchen floor. As the dishwasher begins to fill with water, the float assembly raises and sends a signal to the float switch to turn off the water inlet valve. If the float assembly stem is broken, the float breaks off the stem, or if the retainer nut breaks beneath the dishwasher, you must replace the float and retainer assembly to protect your kitchen floor from water damage.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the power to your Whirlpool dishwasher by either turning off the breaker inside the main panel or unplugging the dishwasher from the wall outlet beneath the sink.

    • 2

Loosen the two screws at the very bottom of the toe kick panel next to the floor on the front of the dishwasher. Remove the screws to the left of the panel and to the right of the panel located about 3 inches above the floor. Lift the panel up and off the two screws you loosened to gain access to the bottom of the dishwasher.

    • 3

Remove the lower dish rack from inside your Whirlpool dishwasher. Locate the float in the front right on the dishwasher floor. The float looks like a small hat.

    • 4

Reach beneath the dishwasher and unscrew the small brass retaining nut holding the float assembly stem in the dishwasher. Pull the float assembly from your dishwasher floor.

    • 5

Slide the gasket provided with the new float assembly over the float assembly stem and into the float. Thread the stem through the opening in the dishwasher floor. Twist the small brass retaining nut onto the bottom of the float stem to hold the float in the dishwasher floor.

Replace the lower dish rack inside the dishwasher. Replace the toe kick panel onto the bottom of the Whirlpool dishwasher. Reconnect the power to the dishwasher.
