How to Replace a Timer Cycle in a Kenmore Calypso

The Calypso is a washing machine model sold under the Kenmore brand and manufactured by Whirlpool. Like most washing machines, the Calypso uses a timer mechanism connected to the control panel for setting different wash cycles. The timer also sends signals to the machine to perform various functions during a cycle, including filling the tub, pumping out the water, and spinning the drum. The Calypso will not operate correctly, if at all, when the timer cycle malfunctions. Replacing the part takes less than an hour.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect the Calypso power cord from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Push in the cycle control knob on the front of the appliance. Twist the knob counterclockwise to unscrew it and remove from the metal shaft underneath.

    • 3

Unscrew and remove the Phillips-head screws on the left and right sides of the Calypso control panel on top of the appliance.

    • 4

Take out the screws in the back of the Calypso control panel where it attaches to the top of the back cabinet.

    • 5

Tip the control console forward to rest the console on the top of the Calypso. You can now see inside the bottom of the console and the back of the control panel.

    • 6

Press the plastic tab on the plug where the wiring harness attaches to the timer cycle inside the console. Disconnect the plug from the timer cycle while holding the tab.

    • 7

Remove the screws holding the timer cycle mechanism to the back of the control panel. Pull out the part.

    • 8

Turn the new timer cycle in the same position as the old part and insert the metal rod protruding from the part through the hole on the inside of the control panel. The cycle control knob will be connected to this metal rod.

    • 9

Attach the timer cycle to the inside of the control panel with the screws.

    • 10

Plug in the wiring harness to the socket on the new timer cycle and press the plug until the tab locks in place.

    • 11

Tip the control console backward to the upright position.

    • 12

Lock the console in place with screws through the back panel and on the left and right sides.

    • 13

Twist the control knob clockwise onto the threaded metal shaft on the front of the console until tight. Do not over-tighten, or you could crack the plastic on the back of the knob.

    • 14

Plug in the Calypso power cord.
